Homewood Retirement Home Evacuated, 1 Person Hospitalized After Fire

November 25, 2025

A fire broke out at Skyline Village, a retirement community located in Birmingham, AL, on Saturday night, affecting 25 units.

The Homewood Police and Fire Departments responded quickly to the incident, leading to the safe evacuation of 90 residents, with one of those receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. Thanks to the additional efforts from Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook fire crews, the blaze was extinguished within 10 minutes. While the building’s sprinkler system effectively contained the fire, it resulted in water damage on the first three floors, requiring residents to seek shelter overnight. The cause remains under investigation.

“I think my crews did a fantastic job sheltering them in place, ensuring they know what to do, so that we minimized any injuries to the citizens,” City of Homewood fire chief Brandon Broadhead told ABC 33/40

The American Red Cross of Alabama has stepped in to assist the 40 displaced residents by providing food, clothing, and temporary lodging. “Our hearts are with every resident who was displaced last night,” said Anne Rygiel, executive director of the Red Cross Mid Alabama chapter, in a statement. “Many of these individuals left their homes with only what they were wearing, and this experience has been incredibly difficult for them. We’re committed to walking with them through this recovery, providing comfort and support for as long as we’re needed.”
