FDNY Battles Lasting Impact of WTC Exposure 24 Years Later

September 11, 2025

As we take a moment to remember those who lost their lives 24 years ago on the September 11th attacks, it is important to recognize the thousands who are suffering from World Trade Center-related illnesses. 343 FDNY firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Now that number has surpassed, with more than 400 FDNY employees dying from rescue and recovery efforts that day. Just this year alone, 39 names have been added to the Memorial Wall at FDNY HQ in Brooklyn.

About 11,000 current and former FDNY employees suffer from Ground Zero-related illnesses, including 3,500 with cancer. While there are federal and public programs to assist in providing the financial support for medical monitoring, cancer treatment, respiratory care, and mental health services, more people are enrolled in the WTC Health Program each year, and the need is outpacing the funding. This week, advocates have asked Congress to help secure funding for the survivors of 9/11, an effort to keep the promise made of “We Will Never Forget.”
